Are you looking for an exciting and fulfilling career in protecting California’s water resources? The State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) Division of Financial Assistance has an opening for a permanent full-time Water Resource Control Engineer in Technical Claim Review Unit I within the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Cleanup Fund.
The position requires that the Water Resource Control Engineer (WRCE) work independently to review complex technical documents and information related to planning, management, and implementation of water quality protection at current and former contaminated UST sites. Applicants should possess strong critical thinking and project management skills; expertise in UST assessment and remediation; and the ability to review and interpret data, technical reports, feasibility studies, and action plans. The WRCE would be expected to provide timely and professional assistance to the public, stakeholders, internal staff, and external agencies. The position requires occasional field visits to current and/or former UST sites.
The position is with the State Water Resources Control Board’s Division of Financial Assistance in the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Cleanup Fund Branch. The office is located at 801 K Street, Sacramento, CA 95814.

Salary Information - CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience. Employees appointed to the Attorney or Water Resource Control Engineer classification will receive Recruitment Higher Above Minimum (HAM) rate in accordance with the approved Civil Service Pay Scales.
In addition, note: Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee’s monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period in accordance with the applicable bargaining contract. The salary range(s) included on this job posting do not reflect the reduction in pay.
