
Facility Engineer

POSITION:
You will be part of a best-in-class client team positioned at Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) in Rahway, New Jersey to support the Small Scale Organic (SSO) molecule pilot plant operations as a Facility Engineer. You will also be integrated into GMP Engineering’s wider network of Subject Matter Experts to receive and provide project support. This position offers a unique opportunity to oversee and coordinate maintenance programs, equipment set-ups and process system upgrades to support Merck’s SSO operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Engineering
- Support the installation, start-up, commissioning and qualification of new process equipment, systems, and utilities to ensure installation and operational compliance to design and project specifications
- Source qualified vendors, and evaluate multiple quotes for procurement of project-suitable equipment and instrumentation
- Support continuous improvement, process optimization, reliability enhancement and facility expansion/upgrade projects
- Provide technical support related to process equipment and utilities, including review of engineering drawings (e.g., P&ID’s, general arrangements), specifications and protocols
Maintenance
- Coordinate, schedule and oversee work performed by Maintenance group and/or external contractors to effectively maintain process equipment, instrumentation, piping systems, electrical systems and supporting utilities within operational state
- Troubleshoot equipment failures and support deviation reporting, Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA’s), change controls and other resolution activities
- Collaborate with Maintenance, Operation and Metrology groups to develop programs and SOP’s for equipment maintenance and instrument calibration
- Maintain facility Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) up to date
- Utilize SAP for entry of Work Orders and ordering of pertinent project equipment
Quality and Safety
- Collaborate with Validation, Quality and Safety groups to assure process equipment and supporting systems are within validated/qualified and safe states
- Remain current with assigned SOP’s and training to ensure continuous compliance
- Act as a liaison to external vendors and contractors without site-access. Ensure safe working conditions are adhered to according to company policy and established procedures.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering
- Relevant working/internship experience as a maintenance or facility engineer
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Mechanically inclined with an understanding of tools and materials, familiarity with construction/installation of piping systems, etc.
- Familiarity with electrical systems, either from a facilities/maintenance or design standpoint, including control and power panel architecture and device knowledge
- Experience with CMMS utilization, including initiation of Work Orders and tracking of preventive maintenance and calibration activities
- Experience in documenting deviations, CAPA’s, etc. related to GMP facilities, utilities, and equipment
- Familiarity with engineering documents and drawings, such as PFD’s, P&ID’s, general arrangements, data sheets and other equipment specifications
- Ability to see long-term projects through from start to finish, navigating set-backs, encouraging pace and interfacing with team members from various educational backgrounds and roles
- Experience interfacing with other disciplines including automation, facility design, process design, validation and quality is preferred
- Experience in commissioning and start-up of control systems is preferred
- Knowledge of plant safety practices such as confined space entry, fall protection prevention and hot work permits is preferred
- Knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC), with experience working with Class 1 Division 1 environments is preferred
LOCATION:
The ideal candidate will be local to Rahway, NJ or able/willing to commute to Merck’s Rahway Campus daily
