Air Resources Engineer
This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.
If you have permanent status and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position/classification at the end of this LT appointment. You will be separated from state service if you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status. During this 12-month limited-term assignment, you may be entitled to receive health, dental, and vision benefits. You will also earn State Service and accrue monthly leave credits.
The California Air Resources Board’s Industrial Strategies Division is seeking an Air Resources Engineer (ARE) for the Strategies Assessment Section in the Carbon Management Branch. This position supports California’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045 through the evaluation and advancement of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategies. Specifically, the ARE will use engineering expertise to assess the efficacy, safety, and viability of emerging and existing CCUS/CDR technologies and contribute to the development of CCUS Program regulations.
This role directly contributes to the State’s fight against climate change, implementation of the 2022 AB 32 Scoping Plan, and fulfillment of the requirements of Senate Bill 905 (Caballero, 2022). Under the direction of the Air Resources Supervisor I, the ARE will:
- Perform Engineering Evaluations of CCUS technologies and projects
- Support Regulation Development
- Analyze Current Regulatory, Permitting, Monitoring and Reporting Requirements
- Work Closely with State, Local and Federal agencies to develop CCUS Program rules
This is a Limited Term position which may become permanent depending on the adopted FY 2025/26 budget.

Working Conditions
This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.?
Beginning July 1st, 2025, per Executive Order N-22-25, CARB employees will be required to report into office four days a week.
The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense, as indicated on their duty statement.
